Artificial shorelines lack natural structural complexity across scales

چکیده
From microbes to humans, habitat structural complexity plays a direct role in the provision of physical living space, and increased supports higher biodiversity ecosystem functioning across biomes. Coastal development construction artificial shorelines are altering natural landscapes as humans seek socio-economic benefits protection from coastal storms, flooding erosion. In this study, we evaluate how much is missing on structures compared rocky shorelines, range spatial scales 1 mm 10 s m, using three remote sensing platforms (handheld camera, terrestrial laser scanner uncrewed aerial vehicles). Natural were typically more structurally complex than ones offered greater variation between locations. However, our results varied depending type structure scale at which was measured. Seawalls deficient all (approx. 20–40% less shores), whereas rock armour smallest largest 20–50%). Our findings reinforce concerns that hardening with simplifies coastlines organism-relevant scales. Furthermore, offer much-needed insight into might be modified closely capture shores support biodiversity.

Complexity measurement of natural and artificial languages
We compared entropy for texts written in natural languages (English, Spanish) and artificial languages (computer software) based on a simple expression for the entropy as a function of message length and specific word diversity. Code text written in artificial languages showed higher entropy than text of similar length expressed in natural languages. Spanish texts exhibit more symbolic diversit...
متن کاملMeasuring information-based complexity across scales using cluster analysis
Article history: Received 29 June 2006 Received in revised form 19 February 2007 Accepted 15 March 2007 Scaling of ecological data can present a challenge firstly because of the large amount of information contained in an ecological data set, and secondly because of the problem of fitting data to models that we want to use to capture structure. We present a measure of similarity between data co...
متن کاملBrain coordination dynamics across spatiotemporal scales On the brain’s dynamical complexity: coupling and causal influences across spatiotemporal scales
The goal of this paper is to reflect on how neural ensembles affect one another, that is, to characterize their causal influences. The work is based on the tenets that function emerges at several levels of organization between microand macro-scale and unfolds on multiple time scales. Such dynamical context creates the condition for complexity and blurs the classical Shannonian definition of tra...
متن کاملAn Investigation into the Effects of Joint Planning on Complexity, Accuracy, and Fluency across Task Complexity
The current study aimed to examine the effects of strategic planning, online planning, strategic planning and online planning combined (joint planning), and no planning on the complexity, accuracy, and fluency of oral productions in two simple and complex narrative tasks. Eighty advanced EFL learners performed one simple narrative task and a complex narrative task with 20 minutes in between. Th...
متن کاملSelf-Construal Scales Lack Validity
Self-construal is thought to mediate and explain the effects of culture on a wide variety of outcome variables. A meta-analysis of published cross-cultural self-construal research is reported in this article, and the results across studies suggests that the evidence for the predicted cultural differences is weak, inconsistent, or nonexistent. The results of 3 priming experiments (N = 121, N = 9...
